You may have heard of the famous Japanese figure – the Gundam. Now, you can see your favorite machine battle against others’ in the great mobile game Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare! It’s free to download on Google Play Store and Apple Store.
Introduction and the game’s storyline
If you’ve ever played Gundam Breaker on your PC before, this game should be familiar with you while being exclusive to mobile devices. Their mechanisms are highly similar. The plot is the sequel of the Gundam Build Fighters Try anime. The player is a high school student, who a Gunpla fanatic has recruited to be her partner. Together, they work their way to restore one of the school’s club to become Japan’s champion in Gunpla Battle.
If the word Gunpla is somewhat unclear – it’s the combination of the word “Gundam” and “plastic figure”, and a Gundam is the Japanese giant mechanical robot. In this game, you get to customize your model the way you desire.
The gameplay feels enjoyable and addictive
The story revolves around building your own Gunpla. To upgrade it, you can use parts that drop upon completing various events in the game. They can also be obtained with real-world currency via some in-app-purchase options. The stronger your Gunpla is, there’s a higher chance that you can conquer every opponent through every stage of your game with ease.
If you’re a fan of the 40-year-old franchise, you may recognize every part that the game features, from heads, torsos to weapons. Each combination of parts results in a Gunpla with distinctive statistics. But if you’re lazy enough not to scroll through every component, the game has the ‘strongest’ button. One tap and the best items in your inventory will form the Gunpla with random stats. Keep in mind, though, that it may look nothing like a dangerous machine you’ve always imagined.
Your character is not customizable, though, as you stick to the default purple-eyed high-school student. Furthermore, your dialogue choices don’t have much effect on other NPCs’ interactions with you. Anyway, the story goes straight to the exciting part – building and fighting to be the last Gunpla standing.
If you want the gameplay to be strategic or straightforward, it’s all up to you. There are several ways that you can cause damage to your enemies. It’s possible to pick out weak spots and crush them with lethal force, or you can tap the screen repeatedly until the opponent explodes. In addition to that, you have a band of alliance: Touma, Sana and a team of CPU players that you can recruit yourself.
Complete the missions
The first ten levels still feel accessible to me, but the daily tasks require some skills to complete. As a free game, Gundam Battle: Gunpla Warfare has a mechanic to keep players checking in daily, which are time-limited missions. They give good rewards, and players won’t be bored quickly, just playing the game’s story mode.
To control, swipe the screen to go to your destination and use on-screen buttons to perform actions. The only objective is to be the last surviving Gunpla.
There’s a mechanism that limits the time you play, which is an energy bar. Energy recharges within a period while leveling up fills in completely. Items can also be substituted for energy consumption.
I guess that you must be curious about the in-game microtransactions
So far, the game is pretty generous with prizes that come with missions and quests. Anyway, there’s a lucky spin system that rewards rare items to players if they get a perfect set of icons. It takes some Haro Chips – in-game currency to roll each time. You’ll eventually run out of them, and the game offers you some currency packs that you can purchase for real money.
Like I mentioned earlier, you can also buy parts with your credit card, but I’d say that in-app-purchases for this game is not very necessary. Like any other title, grinding for parts is one of the things that make a game enjoyable. What is more, the social aspect of the game is still kind of limited, so pay-to-win is not a thing by now.
Gundam Battle: Gunpla Warfare performs fine on my device
The graphics are not so demanding while looking quite attractive. Explosions and motions are well-made and certainly aren’t dull. The game runs smoothly on my Galaxy tablet. The game is still a new face, so glitches and crashes are expected to happen, but I’ve encountered none. With the size of 56mb, it also doesn’t take much space inside my storage. Battery drainage can be a potential problem, though. One hour of playing consumed around 20% of my capacity, so it’s best to carry a power bank with you. If you’re concerned about ads, this game is heaven. Advertisements do appear, but they are non-intrusive and won’t interrupt your game.
My final verdict
The game’s building mechanism is fun to play despite being somewhat simple. There are various parts and colors you can use, and that’s a good thing for a mobile release. The quests’ designs are friendly to users – you can get a whole lot of rewards.
Anyway, I’ve played Gundam building games in landscape mode, and I wish the game were not in portrait. What is more, some quests are impossible just by common sense. How can I take no damage during fights? All in all, I’d give the game a 7/10 rating. I’d recommend it for Gundam fanatics or people who love to build and arrange things.
